All of us must have come across the phrase “women empowerment”. If you haven’t you must be living under a rock. For those unaware, women’s empowerment can be defined as promoting women’s sense of self-worth, their ability to determine their own choices, and their right to influence social change for themselves and others. This phrase was quick to spread in the 20th century.
We at bags by the ocean strongly believe that our mission is to provide a livelihood to young women helping them become independent women in the future. How do we do this you may wonder. All of our bags are unique and hand-stitched, and we employ only women seamstresses to help us bring our designs to reality.
OUR VALUES: WHY DO WE BELIEVE IN THIS CAUSE
Women have always been underestimated in my opinion, ever since medieval times. A lot of women I have come across have experienced being told some bigot statements like “You’re a girl you can’t do that. “or the classic “Shouldn’t you be in the kitchen?”. Hearing this made me realize how much one small comment may destroy someone’s self-worth and respect. I started to do my research and found out that only 20.3% of women are employed compared to 70.6 % of men. A major factor to that is in undeveloped countries, and parents don’t believe in providing an education to the girl child due to their fixed belief of them having very less “earning potential”. This made us at bags by the ocean realize that we have the responsibility to do our part in helping our community by making women feel more empowered, less underestimated, and not dependent on others financially. Despite these facts, things are starting to change.
THINGS ARE CHANGING
Despite all of these facts, citizens are becoming increasingly more aware of this imbalance in the opportunities for men and women. Many organizations such as the UN have made significant progress in advancing gender equality, including through landmark agreements such as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
