Is the Us Government Actually Helping Fight Climate Change

Since the late 1900’s billions of people, including the US government, have recognized, and identified the downfall of our environment due to pressing issues such as global warming and climate change. Since 1992 the US government has taken several actions and passed several laws hoping to minimize these crucial issues.

Through this blog, we will list some of the most important steps taken by the US government and uncover if it is helping climate change.

Here are some of them.

1992:

Senate approves the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. The creation of a global agreement to tackle climate change began in the early 1990s. It was in 1992 that President George H.W. Bush signed the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change along with all the other nations.

-To help support the fledgling wind industry, the renewable energy production tax credit to the 1992 Energy Policy Act was implemented.

2007:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) implemented the compulsion of emission reports to publish a rule requiring the public reporting of greenhouse gas emissions from large sources.

2008-2009:

  • Maria Cantwell and Susan Collins (R-Maine) introduced a Carbon Limits and Energy for America’s Renewal Act, which would have cut carbon dioxide emissions while allowing very limited emissions trading.
  • Richard Lugar and Lisa Murkowski introduced the Practical Energy and Climate Plan to reduce oil imports, improve and create new efficiency standards, and help establish a clean energy standard.

2020:

Major energy legislation: This was the first major energy policy since 2007. The bipartisan bill includes research and development for clean energy technologies, clean energy tax incentives, and the reduction of the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) over 15 years.

What Actions Should Individuals and Communities Take to Curb Climate Change?

There are many actions that individuals, communities, and governments can take to curb climate change. Here are some examples:

  • Reduce energy consumption: Use energy-efficient appliances, LED light bulbs, and turn off electronics and lights when not in use.
  • Transition to renewable energy: Switch to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. Governments can incentivize this transition by providing subsidies and tax credits.
  • Use sustainable transportation: Walk, bike, or use public transportation instead of driving alone. Support the development of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
  • Support sustainable agriculture: Reduce meat consumption, support organic farming practices, and minimize food waste.
  • Plant trees and support reforestation: Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and help combat deforestation, which contributes to climate change.

Climate Change is a Global Issue, but Can We Make a Local Impact By Reducing Waste?

Reduce, reuse, and recycle to minimize waste production is what each one of us can do to bring change. To start with, it’s crucial to support sustainable practices, such as composting, and avoid single-use products.

By focusing on waste reduction, we can promote sustainable practices such as recycling, composting, and upcycling. These practices can help reduce waste and conserve resources, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

It is true that by focusing on waste reduction, we can promote sustainable practices such as recycling, composting, and upcycling. These practices can help reduce waste and conserve resources, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
